Shockwave Therapy for Pregnancy Care

Mar 21, 2025

When it comes to treating pregnant patients, ensuring safety and effectiveness is essential. Expectant mothers often experience a range of physical discomforts, and choosing the right therapies can make a huge difference in their well-being.

At Form Function and Flow Lab, Dr. Kate Eckert provides safe, targeted treatments tailored to pregnancy-related issues. With extensive training in prenatal, postpartum, and pelvic floor care, she brings exceptional expertise to help expectant mothers find relief and maintain their health throughout pregnancy.

Safe Treatment Options

Choosing the right treatment during pregnancy is crucial, and understanding the safety and effectiveness of each option helps patients make informed decisions. Several therapies are available:

  • Decompression therapy: Decompression therapy is generally not recommended for pregnant patients. This treatment involves a belt around the hips, which can apply unwanted pressure. In rare cases of severe disc issues, the decompression table can be used without the belt, but other methods typically provide sufficient relief.
  • Laser therapy: Laser therapy is avoided entirely for pregnant patients’ lower backs due to its powerful wavelengths (660, 810, and 980) and penetration depth of 5 to 7 centimeters. Using this therapy poses a risk of affecting the uterus, making it unsuitable during pregnancy.
  • Shockwave therapy: Stands out for its precision and safety when applied by well-trained professionals. Each pad on the Shockwave machine reaches a specific depth into the tissue, allowing targeted treatment without risk to the pregnancy.

Shockwave Therapy for Pregnancy

Shockwave therapy is not only safe but also highly effective for treating common pregnancy-related issues. It effectively addresses SI joint pain and glute pain, offering relief without posing any risk to the pregnancy. It’s also very effective for upper back and neck pain caused by shifts in gravity and posture, alleviating tension and discomfort in the traps and rhomboids.

Headaches, another common issue, are often linked to the SCM muscle running from behind the ear to the collarbone. Shockwave therapy safely treats this area, providing quick and lasting headache relief.

Managing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Foot Pain

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a frequent side effect of pregnancy, often due to fluid retention and posture changes. While it usually resolves after delivery, it can impact quality of life, especially for those with desk jobs. Addressing this pain before delivery can improve daily comfort and sleep quality, which is essential for overall health.

Foot pain is another common complaint among pregnant patients. Shockwave therapy offers a safe and effective solution, reducing pain and improving mobility without any risk to the pregnancy.

Importance of Comprehensive Prenatal Care

Comprehensive prenatal care is vital for the health and well-being of both mother and baby. It goes beyond pain relief to include chiropractic treatments, the Webster technique, and tailored exercises designed for each stage of pregnancy and postpartum recovery.

This holistic approach ensures that expectant mothers receive well-rounded support, helping them maintain balance, mobility, and comfort throughout their pregnancy.
